PRESS RELEASE
Filipino-American Catholics and devotees of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage (Birhen ng Antipolo) will gather in pilgrimage June 26, 2010 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. to commemorate the enshrinement of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage and dedication of the Oratory built in her honor at the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine.
The National Annual Pilgrimage now in its 13th year will have the Most Reverend Honesto F. Ongtioco, D.D. of the diocese of Cubao as the homilist and main celebrant in the 2:00 o’clock concelebrated mass. Among the concelebrants are the Reverend Monsignor Godfrey Mosley, Pastor of Saint Ann Church and Spiritual Advisor of the Birhen ng Antipolo Ministry and other Filipino and American priests.
The construction of the Oratory of the Birhen ng Antipolo at the northeast corner (cornerstone) of the Basilica started in late 1995 and dedicated in June 1997. It was built with funds raised from contributions of lay people --- devotees of the Blessed Mother. The Oratory is a symbol of the Filipino-American Catholics presence in the United States and a reminder of their on-going journey through life. It is a serene place of worship and silent meditation for all those seeking to commune with God through the Blessed Mother.
Magnificent in its beauty and splendor, the Oratory houses two murals painted by the Blanco family of painters of Angono, Metro Manila, in the Philippines. The 125-year old statue of the Blessed Mother, a replica of the original found at the Basilica of Antipolo, was donated by the Mota sisters, Pacita and Socorro of Malate, Manila. It is the same image that graced the Philippine pavilion in Seville, Spain in 1991 during the International Marian Congress. It is also the same image that stood next to Pope John II in Luneta, Manila, Philippines during the World Youth Day in 1994.
The Blessed Mother under her title of Our Lady of Antipolo is widely venerated by Filipinos. The construction of the Oratory at the Crypt Church of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception holds special meaning to Filipino devotees of the Blessed Mother in the United States.
